Why did you choose to open your business in New Ulm?
We choose New Ulm due to it’s demographics (growing population and general friendliness of the community) and how easy/helpful the planning and zoning staff was on our first phone call. Then we started looking for buildings that fit our need. We found a few and narrowed down the choices down to the one we ended up purchasing.
How has the New Ulm EDA/newulmbusiness.com helped you with your business startup?
The EDA has helped introduce us to other local business and contractors that we used during construction including the funds to help us completely update our new state-of-the-art facility that is environmentally friendly and energy-efficient.
Tell us something exciting about your business
The amazing part of being in the storage business is that you meet people in all walks of life. Some customers are excited to move into a new home, while some are going through a separation. Every person’s situation is unique, but we get the opportunity to make their lives easier. Just one person at a time. Storage fills the need of so much more than just household storage. The aging population uses storage a place to put their items when transitioning into senior living or when a family member passes, it is a great place to put their items until the family is ready to cope with those items. Storage is heavily used by small businesses to store inventory and business supplies. Renting a month-to-month storage unit lowers the barriers to entry for a small business who doesn’t have the resources to build/buy a warehouse. Storage has also played a role in the last mile delivery. For example, the girl scouts also use our climate-controlled storage facilities for temporary storage of their cookies until the troops can pick them up. Another example is a large manufacture of restaurant cleaning supplies utilizes our storage facility as the last mile supply for local restaurants. All of these factors have caused climate-controlled storage (not the typical cold mini-storage) to urbanize serving a growing need in communities.
Have you cooperated/contracted with any other local businesses or people during your startup?
